Our wrestling team, along with a few of our awesome coaches, had a great time at a wrestling camp in Pasco, Washington! It was a fantastic experience for everyone involved.

Hello Wells Combined School Community,
We hope this message finds you well. As part of our ongoing efforts to streamline processes and ensure accurate student information, Elko County School District is introducing a new annual registration requirement beginning with the 2025-2026 school year. Prior to this, students registered in the district were automatically re-enrolled for the next school year, unless parents/guardians unenrolled their child. This process will allow us to update essential records, confirm contact information, and ensure compliance with state and district policies.
All families are required to complete the annual registration for each student enrolled in our school/district. The registration process will be conducted entirely online through our secure Parent Portal. We encourage you to complete this as soon as possible.
There is a link on the Wells Combined School website at https://wells.ecsdnv.net
You can also access the parent portal at https://elkonv.infinitecampus.org/campus/portal/parents/elko.jsp
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to get in touch with Ryan V at the high school or Cuca R at the elementary school.
We look forward to seeing all students on Monday, August 18th. Enjoy the rest of your summer break!

Berumen bats, blocks and pitches to Shasta
Anthony Mori Jul 2, 2025 Elko Daily Free Press
WELLS — The growth of Wells Class of 2025 graduate Cesar Berumen has been evident during his high school career; both as a baseball player and a person. The Covid-19 pandemic — which occurred during his junior high school days — limited his opportunities to improve his skills as he prepared for playing at the high school level. But his uncle, Wells head baseball and basketball coach Joel Soriano, used the time to start a travel ball team with Elko’s Joey Schweer.“I got Cesar and Luis on the Snipers, and we played travel ball with the Elko kids,” Soriano said. “During that time, it showed them that they needed to improve and work harder to get where they wanted to be and what we needed from them. Coming from Wells, you can be a star player, but they needed to get better to compete with the kids from bigger schools.” Berumen’s work ethic, his mindset and his skills grew by leaps and bounds over the past four to five years — ultimately paying off with a college commitment. He has signed to play baseball for Shasta College — in Redding, California — a member of the California Community College Athletic Association. For the 2025 season, the Knights finished with a 16-24 overall record and went 11-14 in the Golden Valley Conference. Shasta sent a recruiter to Smith Valley, watched Berumen play on May 2 and approached him about playing for the Knights. "They liked how hot my bat was, how I blocked the ball and they way I commanded my pitches,” Berumen said.vAt Shasta, Berumen has the choice to pitch — and not bat — or try out for a field position and hit the ball. “I would like to be a two-way player, but I’m there to show them what I can do,” Berumen said. “I’ll play anywhere they need me.” Shasta and Soriano are not the only ones who have recognized Berumen’s talents, skills and qualities — he also sees them in himself. “I have changed a lot. My mental state is more about being a good leader to the younger kids, show them they have to fight for a spot and let them know that they’re fine where they are struggling — we’ll back them up." “When I was in junior high, I couldn’t block a ball and now I can block everything. Hitting, I can recognize pitches and adjust to an umpire’s strike zone. On the mound, I have more command and can locate my pitches better.” Soriano has noticed Berumen’s growth in his skillset as well as ability to lead and compete. “I didn’t want to start him when he was a freshman, but some of my coaches said we needed him to play. He had a lot of pressure to perform,” Soriano said. “Mentally, he became a leader for us, was the MVP the last two years and wanted the ball in crunch time. He calmed everyone down; they trusted and supported each other. He’s a competitor, battles for everything, is there for everyone and has put in a lot of time.” For the short-term, Berumen is not content with simply being on Shasta’s team. “Hopefully, I can get a starting position as a freshman,” he said. Long-term, he has his sights set high.“After Shasta, I want to transfer to a D-I university or a bigger school,” he said. “Someday, I would like to get drafted to the MLB.” As for academics, Berumen plans to work on his general studies and eventually become an electrician.“I just want to thank my aunt and uncle for taking me to travel ball tournaments, getting me all the extra reps and always being there for me whenever I need,” Berumen said.

Our senior class of 2025 decided to have a little fun before saying goodbye to high school for the last time! They pulled some lighthearted pranks on both staff and students. They put bales of hay at each entrance, decorated the hallways with colorful sticky notes and toilet paper, and even made a sneaky visit to Principal Woolsey’s house to cover his tractor in sticky notes! It was all in good spirit and brought lots of smiles! Congratulations to the class of 2025 on completing your years at Wells Combined School, and good luck in your future endeavors!

Last week, students, coaches, and parents came together on the football field to construct a new shot put area and a long jump/triple jump pit. With enthusiasm and teamwork, they transformed these spaces, creating exciting opportunities for our athletes to train on-site, rather than having to travel to Elko for field event practice. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this effort!
